About the Percussion Club

The Inaugural GCISD Percussion Club

December 6, 2004

Originally began as the GCISD Percussion Club began in late 2004, Jeff Ausdemore, the CHHS Director of Percussion, identified a strong desire within the district’s percussion students for more opportunities to network with one another, to deepen their love and knowledge of percussion and to strengthen their self-confidence as performers.  GCISD never had a music program that focused solely on percussion.  With an attendance of 61 students at the inaugural meeting held on December 6th, it became clear that this was an idea whose time had come.  Indeed, Texas is one of the very few states to devote full time staff to the learning and development of percussion.  Mr. Ausdemore seized the moment and the GCISD Percussion Club became a reality.

During the fall and spring semesters, the Percussion Club sessions occur one day a week after school at the CHHS Band Hall. Each grade meets individually. All sessions are conducted by Mr. Ausdemore with mentors provided by the upper classmen of the national award winning CHHS Drum Line. Once a month, students of all grade levels are brought together for clinics and master classes taught by professionals from local universities and percussion organizations.

Since its inception, the Percussion Club has grown in size and popularity, with band directors, principals and parents from every middle school lending strong support and encouragement.

Note:  Due to the schedule demands during the marching and competition season, high school students will attend Club sessions beginning with the spring semester.

Master Class Clinicians for 2005 included:

Jeff Ausdemore - Learning to Listen / Identifying Percussive Sounds

Jim Yakas - Conga

Jeremy Gomez - World Rhythms

Arjuna Contreras - Drum Set
