* Johann Pachebel (1653 - 1706) was a German organist and composer of the baroque period.  Canon in D Major is his most famous composition.

A CANON is a musical composition that employs a melody with one or more imitations of the melody played after a given duration (e.g. quarter rest, one measure, etc.). The initial melody is called the leader, while the imitative melody is called the follower and is played in a different voice.  This form of composition was commonly used during the baroque period.
